Countdown to SPRING!: How To Prep Your Home For The Warmer (And Rainier) Season
Springtime on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware is simply magical!
As we emerge from the cold and dark of winter, we are gifted with budding blooms, sunshiny days and temperatures above the legal age (hehe!).
Hibernation comes to an end and we finally step outside to enjoy the world around us.
As part of that, we may be met with the reminiscence of what winter left behind; some dirt and grime on our home's exterior, perhaps even a broken deck board or a few missing shingles. You may even find your home is ready for a new look!
The possibilities of rebirth and transformation are endless!
As you become reacquainted with the sun and your backyard, here is a curated checklist of tasks to enjoy (or call a professional to enjoy) in preparation for the wonderful upcoming season:
1. Inspect the Roof
- Look for Damage: Check for missing or damaged shingles, especially after winter storms. Maryland winters can be harsh, and ice dams can cause leaks.
- Clean Gutters: Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris to ensure proper water flow. Clogged gutters can lead to water damage on your roof, siding, and foundation.
2. Power Wash the Exterior
- Siding: Clean your vinyl, brick, or wood siding to remove winter grime, salt, and mildew buildup.
- Deck and Patio: Power wash your deck, patio, or porch. Maryland's wet winters can cause mold or mildew growth that will need to be cleaned off.
3. Inspect and Repair Windows and Doors
- Seal Leaks: Check windows and doors for drafts. Reseal gaps or replace weatherstripping to keep your home energy-efficient.
- Clean the Windows: Wash both the interior and exterior of your windows to let in more light and improve visibility.
4. Check for Pests
- Inspect for Signs of Rodents or Insects: Check the attic, crawl spaces, and around the foundation for signs of pests. If you find any entry points, seal them immediately.
- Spray for Termites: Maryland’s humid environment is ideal for termites, so consider having a termite inspection done.
5. Landscape Preparation
- Mulch: Add mulch around flower beds and trees to conserve moisture, reduce weeds, and insulate plant roots from temperature changes.
- Prune Dead Plants: Trim back dead branches and shrubs, especially if they suffered during the winter.
- Prepare Lawn: Aerate and fertilize your lawn to help it recover from winter dormancy.
6. Inspect the Foundation
- Look for Cracks: Inspect the foundation for any cracks or signs of water damage. Ensure that downspouts and gutters are directing water away from the foundation to prevent future problems.
- Check Drainage: Ensure that the ground slopes away from the foundation to prevent water pooling near the base of your home.
7. Check and Maintain Outdoor Systems
- Air Conditioning Unit: Check your AC unit, change filters, and ensure that it’s ready for use. If you didn’t winterize it, have a professional inspect it before you need it.
- Outdoor Lighting: Check that outdoor lighting systems are working and replace any burnt-out bulbs. Consider upgrading to energy-efficient LED lights.
- Sprinkler System: Test your sprinkler system to make sure it works efficiently after winter’s freeze.
8. Exterior Painting and Touch-ups
- Paint Touch-ups: Repaint any areas that were affected by the winter, especially around doors, trim, and shutters.
- Decks & Fences: If your deck or fences need a new coat of stain or paint, do it before the hot summer weather arrives.
9. Prepare for Spring Storms
- Secure Outdoor Furniture: Bring in or securely store any outdoor furniture, umbrellas, or décor before a spring storm hits.
- Trim Trees: If there are overhanging branches, trim them back to avoid damage from high winds during spring storms.
By following this checklist, you'll not only protect your home from potential weather damage but also make your outdoor space more enjoyable during the warmer months ahead!
